How to Start Hunting in California
A Beginner’s Guide (2026)

The Ultimate Guide to Hunting in California for Beginners
Starting your hunting journey in California can feel like navigating a maze of regulations. Between hunter education, GO IDs, and the new 2026 validation systems, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
At Frontera Hunting, we specialize in helping new hunters move from the classroom to the field. This guide breaks down exactly how to get licensed and why wild pig is the best “first-ever” hunt you can have.
"My first time pig hunting and it solidified me doing one every year! An amazing property, setup and experience that I will remember forever."
- B. McCarthy, Frontera Hunter
Step 1:Complete Your California Hunter Safety Course
Choosing the Right Education Path:
10+ hours of in-person classroom instruction.
A 3-hour online course followed by a mandatory 4-hour in-person “Follow-up Class.”
Since California accepts hunter education certificates from any US state, many busy adults (17+) take a 100% online-only course from Texas (TPWD). It is valid for life, accepted in CA, and requires zero in-person time.
(This is 100% legal via California’s reciprocity agreement, provided you are 17 or older)
Step 2:Get Your GO ID and Purchase Your License
Once you have your certificate, you need to register with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).
This is your permanent “Get Outdoors” identification number. You can create this on the CDFW website in minutes.
You must upload your hunter safety certificate to your profile before the system will allow you to buy a license.
The annual license runs from July 1st to June 30th.
Step 3:Understanding the 2026 Wild Pig Validation
As of July 1, 2024, California moved away from individual “Wild Pig Tags.” You no longer buy a tag for every pig you want to hunt.
-
Unlimited Take: You now purchase a Wild Pig Validation. This single validation allows you to hunt an unlimited number of wild pigs for the entire license year.
-
The Benefit: This makes wild pig hunting the most cost-effective and accessible big-game hunt in the state for first-timers.
Step 4:Book Your First Hunt with Frontera Hunting
At Frontera Hunting, we don’t just guide you to the animal; we mentor you. Our beginner-friendly packages include:
-
Expert Education: We teach you how to spot, stalk, and safely handle your firearm in the field.
-
Lead-Free Ammo Guidance: We ensure you are compliant with CA’s strict lead-free ammunition laws.
-
Field Dressing Lessons: Don’t worry about the “messy part”
We’ll show you exactly how to process your harvest so it is cleaned. We can then also arrange for the harvest to be fully processed so you can enjoy your high-quality pork at home.
"I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to hunting. As a first timer, I was a nervous going in, but the guides immediately made me feel comfortable and confident. They explained everything clearly safety, shooting tips, animal behavior, and what to expect during the hunt."
- M. Riveria, Frontera Hunter
Why a Guided Wild Pig Hunt is the Best First Choice
Many new hunters try to go it alone on public land, only to find themselves frustrated by crowds and “No Trespassing” signs. Wild pig hunting is the perfect entry point for three reasons:
-
No Lottery Draws: Unlike deer or elk, there is no “luck of the draw.” If you have a license and a validation, you can hunt today.
-
Year-Round Season: You don’t have to wait for a specific “opening day.”
-
High Success Rates: When hunting with a guide, your chances of a successful harvest are exponentially higher.
